“I committed a dream that sounds more or less like this”.
With these words the italian songwriter Massimo Giangrande describes his latest album: “Beauty at closing time”. His new project is an intense, stylized plunge into despaired hope, with a folk and blues feel that carries the listener into a world made of beauty and grace.
In times of pain and fear the pursuit of beauty can feel like a refuge. The entire album is dominated by cinematic atmospheres, together with its warmly retro-sound giving space to emotional and troubled moments. Throughout the album Giangrande sings as if he were in some touchy mood offering incantations only a spirit will hear. He doesn’t raise his voice, graininess thickens his tone at vulnerable moments, than fades away, and his phrases are far more likely to taper off than to push toward a peak. The music makes space for him to ache.
“I imagined this album like a book told by its music, to be read again and again, time after time”.
